Mrs. Dana Coats sponsors the school spelling bee each year, and she has done so since she first began teaching at Gadsden Middle School (formerly Disque Middle School) in 1997. Students compete in the school spelling bee by first winning their classroom spelling bees. When a student wins the school bee, he or she advances to the Gadsden City Spelling Bee, next to the Etowah County Spelling Bee, then to the Alabama State Spelling Bee, and finally to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., Mrs. Coats is proud to say that last year, during the 2013-2014 school year, Joshua Kelley, a 7th-grade student from Gadsden Middle School, won the Alabama State Spelling Bee and then competed in the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May 2014. This was the first time that a student from Gadsden City Schools has won the Alabama Spelling Bee and advanced to the National Spelling Bee.
The school spelling bee for this year will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015, in the Bill Ford Media Center at 9 a.m.
